  Pitiful.

“What time is it?” she asked.

He stilled, and then straightened up. “Mornin’, sugar. It’s around six.”

“Six. Fuck, loco. We’re on totally opposite schedules. Why are you rushing out?”

He chuckled, a low, sexy sound that made her sore feminine muscles twinge. “I’m not rushing. If I were rushing, I would have left an hour ago. That’s the time I’m programmed to get up.”

  “Stay. I’ll make you breakfast.”

Was she being desperate, or did she merely sound polite? She did want him to stay, not just so they could play some more, but because she wanted to talk to him, too. She wanted to be sure she hadn’t scared him off with her passion, if she could even call it that.

  “Do you even eat breakfast?”

She shrugged. “I usually pick up something on the way home after work and stuff it into my mouth before I fall into bed. My big meal is lunch, I guess.”

“Well, I’d love for you to make me breakfast, but I need to be in the greenhouse by eight and at The Beaudelaire at two to dismantle all the patio decorations from last night’s guest soiree.”

“Oh…” She drummed her fingertips atop the sheets and drew her bottom lip between her teeth. She wasn’t going to beg. That had never been her style, but she knew there’d been something holding him back last night. For all she knew, maybe it remained an issue. “I’m on vacation until Monday by order of Ms. Gibson.”

“Gotta use up that vacation time. I lost a week last year.”

“Damn. I’ll be back Monday night, I guess.”

“I’m usually off Mondays and Tuesdays.”

Of course, she wouldn’t have known that. She never paid attention to other departments’ schedules.

She drummed her fingers some more, racking her brain for anything to say, and he just stared at her.

He didn’t seem to be quite ready to move on, although he had somewhere to be.

Perhaps he was unafraid of taking charge when their clothes were off, but maybe she needed to call the plays now.

“Could you…use an extra pair of hands in the greenhouse?”

He blinked, stared at her a bit longer, unnerving her. Then his lips quirked up into that sensuous grin and he narrowed his eyes at her. “You might get dirt under your nails.”

“Well, what’s a little dirt to a rose?”

“I’m going straight to work right afterward. I won’t have time to bring you home.”

“You ashamed to be seen with me, Trevor?”

His grin winded and he crawled onto the bed and straddled her hips. “No.” He bent down and kissed her, tenderly, but he didn’t linger. “Everyone will think you’re dating down.”

“My mother is a school teacher and my father is a shipyard mechanic. I never thought that about her. They were broke, but happy.”

  “I like my job.”

“Then you should keep it until that’s no longer the case.”

“You are a damned interesting woman, sugar.”

She shrugged and tried to pull the sheets up over her drafty cleavage.

He nudged them back down. “I thought you were getting up. I’ve got dirt for you to play in.”

“Okay. I’m getting up. Wait for me in the kitchen.”

  “I don’t believe you’re getting up.”

“You’re right. I was going back to sleep for five minutes.”

“Figured.” He grabbed the sheets and yanked the down before she could pin them beneath her arms, and suddenly her legs were over his shoulders.

He wore a cheeky grin that could only mean one thing.

She gasped as he dipped his body lower.

  “Need some help waking up?”

Before she could compose a response, his tongue darted out and tickled her clit.

“Uh…” She gripped the sheets as he probed her slit and kept his troublemaking stare locked on her face.

  “That a yes, sugar?”

She nodded and grabbed his hair, guiding his mouth back into position. “Mm-hmm. Need help.”

“I know just the thing.” He lowered her legs to the bed and slipped back, and his fingers worked over his belt buckle.

Hell yes! She moved back on the bed, closer to the headboard.

Moving in the opposite direction and off the bed, he winked at her. “If you want me in you, you’d better make your way to the shower.” He heeled off his boots and shucked off his shirt as he backed out.

Fuck, she couldn’t believe this was happening. He’d said she was pretty and looked at her as if she were some kind of goddess. Valentine’s Day had come and gone and he was still there. This wasn’t just a one-night stand.

She walked toward the sound of water drumming against the tub bottom and joined him in the bathroom just in time to see his fine, naked ass disappear behind the opaque shower curtain.

“Making yourself at home, huh?” She pulled the edge of the curtain back and stepped in behind him.

  “You mind?”

  “Not at all.”

He turned, placed a bar of her own damned soap into her hand, and then pointed to his belly.

She pouted, but started working the pink bar down his six-pack toward his upright cock. “I thought you said something about getting in me. That’s why I got up.”

He chuckled, and worked his soapy fingers down to her ass. He cupped and kneaded it, while bending to tickle the seam of her lips with his tongue.

Closing her eyes, she let him it into her mouth and enjoyed the passionate give-and-take for a while before finally ceding control of the kiss to him. She wanted him to have the control—she trusted that he’d give her what she needed just like his roses.

He pulled her bottom lip between his teeth as he withdrew, imparting a pleasurable sting before letting it snap back in. “I never said when, sugar.”

  “Hmm?”

His winsome smile made him look so innocent, but then he looped her damp hair around his fist and tugged gently, causing her chin to tilt up toward him.

He looked into her eyes for a minute, saying nothing, but he didn’t really need to.

Patience, he was saying. Later. There’d be a later for them, and they both knew it.

“Okay,” she whispered on a sigh.

He trailed his fingertips lightly down her neck and kissed her jaw. “Rosalinda by any other name would be just as sweet.”

She laughed at his Shakespeare rephrasing, and continued soaping up his body when he let go of her hair. “Just for you, Trevor. I’m only sweet for you.”

  About Holley Trent

Holley Trent is a Carolina girl gone west. Raised in rural coastal North Carolina, she has Southern sensibilities but her adventurous spirit drove her to Colorado for new experiences.

Holley writes sassy contemporary romances threaded with oodles of conversational humor, and fantasy/paranormal romances set in her home state.

Her protagonists regularly fall victim to her odd sense of humor and find themselves in improbable situations (with happily-every-after outcomes). Holley's cast of characters tends to swear, drink and do a fair amount of carousing, but they're generally well intentioned and obey all laws and ordinances. Usually.

She’s a member of Romance Writers of America as well as Colorado Romance Writers and CIM-RWA: the Cultural Interracial and Multicultural special interest RWA chapter.
